2005 Outstanding Rural Board Member

Tom Weigand

has spend the last sixteen years serving his community and school as a School Board member working to improve and support the Chilhowee R-IV School District.

The words "excellent leadership qualities" best describe the dedication that Mr. Weigand has provided to not only his many years on the board of education but to the district as a whole. He has donated his time and talent to the improvement of the school district in many ways. As the current President of the Board, he is very creative when making difficult decisions concerning the budget, he is articulate when reviewing policies and he is instrumental in the overall success of the board. Tom is also described as one providing stability to this team and is always one you can count on.

During his tenure on the board, Mr. Weigand has demonstrated his leadership ability through decisions that helped lead the district through difficult times, to promotion of new educational programs of the district. Some of these programs include: Accelerated Reading, Vocational Agriculture, Family and Consumer Science, Instructional Televison, and other programs used to provide incentives and rewards for students who demonstrate academic growth.

Because of his vested interest and alumni relationship with the Chilhowee School District, he chose to raise his family in the district and dedicate years of volunteer service. A father of four - three daughters that have graduated from high school and college and are currently working on advance college degrees, working for the Peace Corp and making an impact on our world and a son who is currently a high school sophomore at Chilhowee. Their determination and attitude are a reflection upon what Tom Weigand brings to the Board of Education.

Through his commitment for a quality education, the children and citizens of the Chilhowee School District owe Tom Weigand this recognition as the Outstanding Rural School Board Member for 2005.
