ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

TARKIO R-I SCHOOL DISTRICT

Tarkio, Missouri

(application)

THE COMMUNITY

Tarkio R-I School District is located in Tarkio, Atchison County, Missouri in the northwest corner of the state.  Tarkio is a pleasant, rural community full of beautiful trees and remarkable old homes located at the crossroads of Highways 136 and 59, near Interstate 29 with easy access to the St. Joseph/Kansas City and Omaha/Lincoln metro areas.

Tarkio has an active, progressive business district where two new major businesses have recently been added.  Two wind farms currently operate in the county with some of the turbines located in the Tarkio R-I district.  A third wind farm with seventy-two turbines is under construction in the district and should be completed within the next year.

Many recreational and family activities are available.  Tarkio boasts two city parks that include a community building and rodeo grounds, a recently reconstructed swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course with driving range, and a walking track available to the public.  Fishing and hunting enthusiasts have access to the Missouri River, the Tarkio River and two nearby wildlife refuges.  Citizens are involved in a number of civic organizations, and there are eleven active churches in the Tarkio/Westboro communities.

Tarkio offers the opportunity to live and work in a community filled with spirit, rural values, and a reasonable cost of living.

THE DISTRICT

Tarkio R-I School is located in Tarkio and is comprised of students from the Tarkio and Westboro communities.  There are two campuses across the street from one another, the elementary school and the junior/senior high school.  The football stadium and track are just across the street to the west, with an area for community baseball and/or soccer.  Many students walk to school, and bus routes serve the outlying rural area which encompasses most of the central and northeast part of Atchison County.

The district places emphasis on technology but also has a strong belief in old-fashioned, basic teacher and student interaction.  A Missouri Preschool Project preschool, Kids' Korner, serves up to twenty 3- and 4-year olds.  The special education program is strong and includes a nicely equipped life skills classroom and one of the only sensory rooms in the area.  ITV and MoVIP classes are available to high school students, as well as approximately 40 units of dual credit courses taught by Tarkio teachers.  Tarkio R-I earned the "Distinction in Performance" designation for the 2007-2008 school year.

Tarkio R-I is financially strong with a total annual budget of approximately $4.4 million and an ending fund balance in 2007-08 of 39.61%.  This is after a planned budgetary spend-down to pay for a half-million dollar roof replacement on the elementary building.  Payments in lieu of taxes from the newest wind farm will further boost local revenues beginning in the 2009-2010 school year.

The staff, Board of Education, and community place a strong emphasis on academic excellence across the district.  Many opportunities are available to parents and other members of the community to participate in and support school classes and activities.  Tarkio has many strong and active fans.
