Outstanding Rural Board Member

Hugh Wallace

Hugh Wallace has spent the last twenty years serving his community and school district as a School Board Member working to improve and support the Mound City R-II School District.

The words "a true advocate for kids and education as a whole," best describe the dedication that Mr. Wallace has provided to not only his many years on the board of education but to the district and community as a whole.  During Hugh's tenure on the board he has been involved with three superintendent searches, a major player in three tax rate increase issues, and several building projects.  To get a better understanding of Mr. Wallace's position on issues, one must recognize the fact that he by trade has a large farm operation, therefore tax increases have directly affected his livelihood, yet Hugh has understood the importance of creating finances for the education of students.

During his tenure on the board, Mr. Wallace has been recognized for his outstanding leadership by his peers by being elected to serve as the board secretary twice, the board vice-president twice and as the board president for six years.

Hugh Wallace is a leader in his community as well.  He is a long time member of the First Christian Church, Mound City Lion Club, Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative board member, and Farmers Mutual Insurance Company board member.

One of the most impressive qualities that Hugh displays is that he consistently chooses decisions that were "right" for students, even if the decisions were not popular.  One of his colleagues shares, "I have personally witnessed his ability to gather facts, analyze data, examine problems and controversial issues carefully, and methodically draw conclusions that became win-win propositions for all parties involved.  Although not extremely vocal, when he speaks, he represents the voice of wisdom, authority, and his opinions are valued by his peers."

By virtue of serving on the Mound City school district, Hugh Wallace has consistently demonstrated he is a "warrior for children," "an advocate for teachers," and "a faithful public servant of his community" which makes him deserving of the honor as the Outstanding Missouri Rural Board Member for 2008.
